Auto box losing drive
Hi, I have been offered a 1999 2.0v6 auto for a low price and as I'm missing 75 ownership, I'm tempted!
It's in very good condition in and out, it's a club spec so no lovely leather but I can cope with that! It's done 131k and the cam belts were done last year at 115k. The only prob is that the seller was driving it the other day, and it lost drive from the auto box. He went out to try it he next day after being towed back, and it drove a couple of hundred yards before losing drive again. He's selling it as spares or repair, and I wondered if it might be an easy fix or could it end up being a money pit? He's asking £450 for it but I think I could get it lower as he wants it gone. Worth a punt? Thanks Dan |

Being blunt - a lot of spanner work to repair the autobox, plus cost of parts and fluid maybe over £200, plus anything else, and it will be expensive to run.
As scap the engine is worth something plus all the bits and bobs. IMO better to buy an SE as the 'toys' cruise, heated seats, parking sensors etc are worth paying out for. |

It could be a simple case of too low oil.
Too low oil can be caused by a ruptured oil pipe. On some 1.8, there is radiator for the autobox under the front right fender, right in the corner. The pipes for the oil are made of aluminium and can easily rupture if they touch steel. I don't know if that could be the case here, but I would check the oil level and check for leaks if low. That could be a cheap fix. |

ATF is a starter; there are also lots of threads on replacing the solenoids too (I guess a T4 would indicate the latter). If its a nice spec car for peanuts could be worth it in parts

He's told me its had a gearbox service in the last year so I'm guessing the fluid should be ok, which leads me to think it could be more costly than a simple oil change. To be honest I think it would end up costing too much to get it sorted, if it was a Connie or a different engine then it could be worth it, but having had a 2.0 v6 auto before I know how costly they are to run, and it would need to be a nice car to counter that!
Never mind, I'm sure ill get back behind the wheel of a 75 one day! |
