I do not believe that the members are that naive that they believe that people who trade their expertise, secondhand and even new parts are registered businesses in the normal sense of the meaning.
Calling them by another name will not stop the misappropriation of member's money.

I am a business, and always have been, with invoicing, taxes paid, public liability insurance, motor trade policy etc, etc, etc.

The main thing is though, motor trade work makes up less than 1% of my business turnover, however that is just the thing, irrespective of how you conduct your business affairs, if you treat your customer with disrespect, then you soon have no business, customers are not a distraction from your business, they are the reason your business exists.

The key to success is simple, treat your customer fairly, don't wipe their eyeballs with extortionate prices, or turn out substandard work, and you build up a good relationship, and your business grows through word of mouth.

You are however only as good as your last job, so it pays to keep on your toes

But, the sad reality is that most trade people who s*** their customers do very well financially!

And, money motivates more people than personal integrity.

Totally agree with your philosophy of doing business. When I worked I had responsibility for the support and maintenance of hundreds of Air Traffic Control radars across the world. I had a plaque on my desk which said "If you do not look after your customers then someone else will".
You are a registered business, as that is the way you earn your living and the motor trade is a very small part of your time/income. However it was said post#317 that before people trade on here that they should be registered as a business with all the implications that means. However I have met and dealt with a number of people on here who have Trader status and are in full time PAYE employment.
Being registered as a business does not stopped you ripping off customers. Perhaps we should have a Trusted Trader type system where people can rate the Trader. People like yourself, BigRuss, Trikey, Mickyboy etc would be scoring 100%

Quite honestly, I think money was the worst thing that was ever invented. It must have been invented by greedy people or those who could not foresee how it would be abused.
Surely it would have been better if I was a builder, and you were a mechanic, and either one of us wanted a job done, it would have been easy to get your required needs accomplished.Although it appears at first to be rather complicated, not having to pay money which people earn at different rates doing different jobs, society would have grown up with the knowledge that they could get anything they wanted doing, would have been possible. It would also have made it easier for everyone to be on the same page without being jealous or envious of those amongst us who are billionaires. My father always said:- neither a lender or a borrower be. A very good attitude to have.

I see there is a banned trader currently very active on Facebook. His final post on here about 3 years ago said he had decided to get out of breaking cars and supplying parts. He upset a lot of members on here.
Pictures of his cars, workshop and stock just go to show there is life after being banned and he was simply lying.
There is no vetting in place anywhere on line. We can all set ourselves up as traders of some kind or another. As has been said, word of mouth is one of the more reliable references you can get.

David, I often operate such a "revenue neutral" barter system, and indeed even now often refuse payment to store up a "credit" against something I may need in future.

I prefer this, especially if it's someone who can be considered a friend, as there is no awkwardness surrounding payments

I fully agree with that sentiment, and something I advocated when I was a trader on this forum.........LINK
