Bonnet and boot struts always work with less effect in extreme cold weather.
If you work the bonnet up and down briskly a few times you will find in most cases they will hold better.
At the end of day replacement is the answer but at a cost sometimes. Two very short ones for the boot of my SL have just cost me £80.

There’s sometimes a different pressure on the same length for example the Rover SD1 tailgate with Vitesse spoiler required different struts.
I know of someone who fitted Vitesse struts to a regular model and the tailgate shot up way too fast.
