Be very careful with easystart. It can break the crank or pop a piston crown. Have someone crank the engine whilst you just give it a quick sniff. Too much and it is almost explosive.

Just a thought , does diesel deteriorate like petrol if left a long time ?

Thank You Trikey, Mike Noc and Arctic for all of your input and providing ideas to solve my non starting of the engine...I'm pleased to say it now starts, YIPPEE!

I filled the tank with another 5 litres of diesel fuel making the fuel gauge needle hover just under the half way mark. I cleaned out the air filter box and removed the old dirty air filter and replaced, a bit black and insect ridden.

I then removed the old fuel filter and emptied the contents into a container...it was pretty black looking diesel and had a nice dark sediment when it had settled, yuk!

I fitted a clear pipe onto the under bonnet fuel pump pipe and turned on the ignition to pump through anymore trapped diesel that might have been dirty but it was running fine and a normal colour. Fitted the new fuel filter half filled with new diesel, checked all the connections in place. Sat in the car turned on the ignition for two 30 second bursts of diesel to flow through. At this point I had the rear seat removed and I could hear a lot of gurgling of fuel in the tank...was this because of the extra fuel added filling both sides of the tank, was it trapped air?

Then I went for it and turned on the ignition and it struck up first time. I let it run for ten minutes, switched it off and did several re starts of the ignition and each time it started.

So I think the extra fuel and new fuel filter did the trick, what do you guys think? Anyway, thanks everyone. Now to get on with giving it a full service and preparation for the forthcoming MOT.

Old fuel and gunge in filter wouldn't help. Glad you're up and running.

Probably an air leak or gunk.

I would run some injector cleaner through it, half the bottle in the filter and the rest in the tank.

If you have a bypass or stretch of dual carriageway between you and the test centre I would make sure it gets a good couple of blasts before it goes for a test.
