Default Tesco Engine Oil Offer

Bought some engine oil today for my baby, due a service so have been looking for reasonably priced 15w40.

Tesco came up trumps with "buy one get one free" on two litre cans. Four of those should easily cover me

works out roughly £10!

Assuming it's Tesco own brand diesel engine oil, IMO it should be "Tesco oil for Tesco engines", but I suppose any diesel oil is OK if it's changed often enough.

Cost £10, and say change it after 5000 miles to be on the safe side? that's £2 per 1000 miles.

Spend £20 on oil, change it after 5000 miles, that's £4 per 1000 miles.

Now it's getting expensive....

So, buy decent branded oil, change it after 10,000 miles, and you're back to £2 per thousand miles, with fewer oilchanges, and less old oil to dispose of.

Forgive my cynicism, but I don't trust Tesco for fuel, so I'd only buy branded oil from them. Perhaps not the response you expected, and I'm probably wrong, but that's my opinion, sorry.

Go to the local trade parts center and buy branded oil from there. I just bought 5 liters of Mobile 1 for £20. Now thats a bargain.

I tend to go for the 'middle priced' branded oil and change it every 10k.

Certainly won't buy the real expensive stuff, of which in my opinion doesnt justify the price tag for everyday motoring. And only used to buy the cheapie stuff years ago when I could only afford big, tired old heaps which used to pee all of their oil over the drive or through the combustion chambers in any case

I have enough messing about to do trying to crowbar working "full time", allotment and maybe some fishing in to **** about with oil changes so I use a local Setyres Garage and for £40 including the filter and me popping over the road for a full on brekkie....it's well worth it "for me"...and I get an extra cuppa "lol".

Cheers
Tony

Just back from Tesco - The offer is only for mineral oil.

My garage (I'm lazy) always puts synthetic in my diesel lump.

The book says 10/40 or 15/40, ACEA2 or ACEA3 (whatever they are) every 15K miles and I change every 10K.

Am I being conned or can I use mineral oil or used chipfat in the BMW oilburner ?

I cannot remmeber the name of the place but if you live near Crawley, West Sussex it's the one oposite from Screwfix on the Manor Royal industrial estate. It was to good a price to leave but I'm not sure if it's a little thin for my 2.5 v6. The book recomends 10w40 but I've heard good things about Mobil 1 fully synthetic. The stuff I bought is 0w40.

The tesco oil meets Acea 2, 3 and 4....

Mine gets an easy life ( no motorways and little in the way of very short journeys or traffic) so I think she'll be fine.

Tesco oil is made by Comma IIRC (as are most supermarket and Halfords oils)
