I'm going to need a new exhaust soon and if that's the price for a mild steel system would rather pay a bit more for a guaranteed for life stainless system.

Surely, it depends on the condition of all sections of the exhaust?

around £50 for cat back replacement from GT exhausts

http://www.exhaustdirectfit.co.uk/detail/?id=6919

the cat is a bit more expensive tho

if you don't need a new cat - i'd say you're only around £100 in parts (plus postage)

But they told him it had to be a whole exhaust because it comes in one part and you can't replace one bit.
Not true as most aftermarket ones, even if replacing all of it, comes in three parts.

It really annoys me when garages or other places give incorrect information like that.

Fair enough if you do actually need all of it but that is not what they said.

Personally I wouldn't use a garage that didn't know this.

I go with steve-45. I was getting 3 mpg more on average mileage readout after fitting stainless steel. Pays for itself eventually if you are keeping car for any length of time or doing a high mileage. Can be transferred to another ZT if you change cars.

The following might help to soften views.

OEM: http://www.rimmerbros.co.uk/Item--i-GRID001957

Aftermarket: http://www.rimmerbros.co.uk/Item--i-WCG102831SLPP

The latter appears to me to be a single piece system despite being aftermarket.

If the garage had said it needed a complete system including cat then the outcry would be justified.

I don't think it reasonable to use words like "most". The question is whether anyone manufactures just the back box specifically for the CDT. I woulld like positive confirmation for my own benefit if anyone is in a position to provide this.

In any case, the OP's question was whether the price was fair.

Yep that's what I did on my CDTI when the back box fell apart after 13 years.
