You won't open them to edit with anything else I believe.
Bit like the full 3D modelling version of AutoCad. You can view it with other stuff but edit? Nah. Not a chance.
The screenshots you see are exports from the original into a different format.
Interesting thread as I use Catia for a large part of my job
It was originally developed by the French company Dassult for designing aircraft, but later adopted by several other design industries including automotive.

I've also dabbled a little in 3D scanning and reverse engineering as part of my job in the past. Blue light scanning would be the way to go with with scanning individual components like wheels.

I know there are companies out there already doing it, but should that lottery win come my way, I have always fancied buying myself the kit and scanning a complete car to 2 with the aim for re-manufacturing some of those hard to find components.
