I'll play devil's advocate.
Despite many people still working from home, the number of miles traveled is back up to pre-pandemic levels. This would suggest that drivers are making a higher percentage of what could be termed decision or lifestyle based as opposed to necessary journeys. This is hardly an indicator of hardship. I would agree that those on low pay will always suffer from higher prices. But this is easy to change - increase the national minimum wage or pay additional benefits to the lower paid. Also, when you look at the RAC's graphs, retail fuel prices do on the whole track wholesale prices. The exception being the last month but then it has hardly been a normal month. Would a better system not be to increase the duty on fuel by say another 25p/litre and at the same time increase the minimum wage? |
