When we moved here in 1979 there were 2 open fires and a small immersion heated hot water tank. Installed a Rayburn MF (multi fuel) in the 1st few months in 1 fire place, a wood burner in the other. The Rayburn has been used to heat the house and heat water in winter ever since. It will bur everything from wood through peat to anthracite (never burned peat though). I use coal at night when a fire box half full of coal will burn for 12 hours; if I fill it with wood its gone out by the morning. The wood is free either from the hedgerows, son in law's off cuts (he's a chippy) or broken pallets. Anthracite at £350/tonne used only when needed. The wood burner hasn't got a grate so cant burn coal though I believe Stovax do make grates for it.
