Default Advice on buying a Rover 75.

Hello, I currently own this Rover 825 Sterling, I've owned it for eight years now and love it deeply but it has terminal gearbox problems as well as a myriad of other faults. It's time it was replaced.

I want to get a Rover 75 next, must be diesel, must be automatic.

This Rover 75 is for sale locally on ebay, a 2005 Contemporary Hi-line. I've talked to the seller on the phone, he's a private seller and sounds genuine enough. It seems to tick all of the boxes.

Can I ask anyone "in the know" to take a quick look at the ad and give me their thoughts? I've done a fair bit of research and it seems that the 2.0 litre BMW-engined diesel has no particular vices, my garage tell me to make sure that the crankcase breather filter has been changed, it's overdue a service and I would factor that into the deal but any other thoughts or advice would be gladly received- ta!

Looks like a nice, and very well-specced example, with the Harman Kardon sound system, and the Xenon headlights being particular highlights for many. The seats don't look to have too much bolster wear, and aside from the late service, it looks well-kept.
Diesel-wise, I don't know a great deal, I'm afraid, though there are lots of very knowledgeable chaps on here!
Sorry to hear about your 800's issues, as it looks like a lovely example, but I hope you soon become a 75 owner, and enjoy the experience!

Its a nice car, cheap and has an auto box on a diesel, quite rare

Snap it up quickly before someone else does. has absolutely everything on it.

I think the 47.8 MPG shown on the panel is very ambitious & has been "zeroed out" & drove very carefully to get it that high. My diesel auto does about 38 MPG average.

It does look like a nice car though & as he mentions in the listing, he has to get rid of it quick because the insurance is running out, I would put in an offer of £2500 he can only say no & might meet you in the middle

Nice motor, fair price, well specced and reasonable mileage, due a service but that would be something I would do as a matter of course if I was buying it.

Thanks for the replies so far, and for the PM to which I have replied.

The Sterling is for sale on ebay and looking at his feedback the current high bidder has recently bought an 800 Coupe with head gasket failure so I'm guessing he wants it for the engine. I'd rather it was restored but I guess that's better than it just going for scrap.
