Default CDT crankshaft pulley fitting - align parallel key? Not in RAVE!!

Hi folks

I have fitted a CDT crankshaft pulley as per RAVE - no mention of any special orientation whatsoever.

But have now seen a BMW manual which says this:

https://workshop-manuals.com/bmw/3_s..._damper_(m47)/

Caution! Danger of incorrect assembly. Align opening in vibration damper to parallel key. Insert central bolt when parallel key is noticeably located between opening.

Installation: Mount vibration damper and align opening to parallel key. Install new central bolt.

??!! This is not in RAVE!

So do I need to take it off and do it again?

Help.......

Looking at this again, does the BMW M47 (not R) have a proper key on the crankshaft that the pulley engages with that the M47R doesn't?

I assumed the instruction meant to visually line it up with a key behind that doesn't actually engage as on the M47R the pulley doesn't engage into a key.

Maybe it's fine??

Well 'danger of incorrect assembly' threw me - I thought it didn't mean a parallel/Woodruff key that actually fitted into the pulley but something behind that only visually aligns with the notch in the pulley. Hence you could put it on in the wrong orientation and get an 'incorrect assembly'.

With a key that actually fits into the pulley, which the M47R doesn't have, how on earth do you end up with 'incorrect assembly'? Surely it just wouldn't go on and if you tried to do up the bolt you'd end up with a very very wonky pulley

Having now properly searched the forum I see this difference between M47 & M47R has been highlighted a few times and confused a few other people who have also read this bit in the BMW manual, so I don't feel quite so stupid now.

Just to add to the confusion Colin, Rimmers show a key in one of their drawings, but it is for the cam chain drive sprocket, which sits just inboard of the crank pulley.

That Rimmers catalogue could cause confusion if you were not too sure in the first place.----

Just noticed Mike we are running neck and neck on our post count and we joined the forum many years ago at a very similar time.

Keep up the good work.---

Cheers Jon. Funnily enough I don't usually look at my post count, but having checked it you are right.
