Default A challenge for electronic experts

A challenge should you wish to accept it. I was not sure if to post here, technical or technology, but here won.

Ok, so for the challenge.

You are to detect the car going into reverse and supply 2-3 seconds of power to the wing mirrors to make them point down.

You then need to supply 2-3 seconds of power when the car is put into first, drive or the ignition turned off to reset the mirrors.

To make the challenge more of a challenge, there needs to be the facility to turn the system off. This is for those, such as myself that have to tilt the mirrors down, so towing mirrors can be fitted.

The normal switch for adjusting the mirrors must remain operational.

I think 1 wire from gear box to door card should be the only one to run, the rest and the device should fit behind drivers door card and hopefully any power can be obtained at the drivers mirror switch.

Unlikely that you'd ever get the correct mirror position with having a position sensor (i.e. memory mirrors same as memory seats).

As above my FL2 does this, it also will go back to the original position if you reverse at speed so not to confuse the driver, all built in with memory so it would be a big task to convert the mirrors on ours I would think.

You might find this thread of interest where the dipping mirror in reverse was discussed. https://forums.mg-rover.org/mg-zt-ro...49/index5.html

i'm no electronics expert but pick up power from reverse switch/light.

send power to wires that do the tilting for 2-3 seconds. should be able to do this at drivers door. hey presto

no idea if you would need to make sure power does not run the wrong way to the switch.

cut into the wires at drivers door card.

am I imagining this to be far simpler then it is?

I think the BMW E46 could do this on the passenger's side with no 'off' button, might be a starting point - some of the electronics might be compatible.

Time mirror from normal position to required reverse position. Wire from reverse switch to timer circuit the from timer circuit to each mirror. At each mirror locate wire to down movement drive and connect.
Timer could then be set to required number of seconds.
A normally open relay could be used after reverse switch and using similar idea as above mirror would be raised for same time when reverse switch not operated.

Any way that's my thoughts as a non electronic body.
