Ultavox Vienna, I still listen to it in the car together with anything else Midge Ure has done. After that it was ELO and Human League.

I found music quite late when I left home as my parents did not approve of ''modern music'' as they were quite old. I would listen to the Radio 1 when they were not at home but my father would listen to Mario Lanza and my mother would have Glenn Miller.

My ‘oldun’s’ were quite nifty on the ivories and mum used to play at the local lodge when there was a party. So the music of my youth (1950’s onwards) was less than popular in the house.

In any case I never had the money for what is now called an album. Albums then were called ‘Eagle’ and ‘Dandy’.

So, would a single be allowed? The first record I bought was The Diamonds version of Little Darlin’ and I’ve still got it. Unfortunately, it’s a 78rpm so haven’t been able to play it for 40 years!

There is a wonderful memory of my old friend, George Newby, re-writing the words in celebration of the insurance man from the death club who knocked on the door once a week. Loudly. His nickname was Old Septic Knuckles for obvious reasons. The tune was as the above record. From memory his name was Dougie Weller so if there are any living relatives (Runcorn 1950’s on)I’ll bet you are well insured.

Good thread!

Ignoring the Pop-py stuff my earliest influence was the Roxy Music first album ... leading to the purchase of every Roxy / Bryan Ferry album until he went very mainstream and cover version centric.

Then the Leftism album by Leftfield in '95 and (sadly) only their 2 subsequent albums.

Not very Ferry-esque at all if you know them!

John

U2 The Joshua tree. Always been in my collection and was lucky enough to see The Joshua Tree tour live at Twickenham.

Simple Minds"In The City of Light" A live album, better than the radio edits.

The Clash, London Calling. An amazing album, one that got me through tough times in my life.

The first album I bought was Iron Maiden’s debut album in 1980 when I was 12........that was it, I was hooked on rock music for life.
Second was Motörhead’s No Sleep ‘Til Hammersmith then, British Steel by Judas Priest. Still own them all.

Those three albums got me into ‘older’ bands such as Thin Lizzy, Rush, Sabbath, Deep Purple, Led Zep, Floyd, Fleetwood Mac, Rainbow etc, etc whilst listening to the current bands of the time such as Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth etc etc.

These days, I still listen to my old albums along with bands like Muse, Foo Fighters etc, etc

I can't remember which order they were purchased in but significant early albums would be Rattus Norvegicus and No more Heroes from The Stranglers, Wish you were here, Crime of the century, Parallel lines, Signing off amongst others.

My first album came about because I could afford to buy a record for myself, but my tastes are extremely varied.

It would be an interesting exercise for each of us to post a link to our favourite so that others can sample it.
Good idea

Sorry, I should now say, now I've had time to think about it, my first album was The Good, The Bad and the Ugly, after seeing the film. It was the first album I could afford, we had a Dansette mono record player and therefore, I bought a Mono record, you had a choice then..............and the track.......Ecstasy of Gold
(the music in this link lasts until 3:25)
