Not at all Simon, two of them were on the original belts, one, a rather nice Tahiti blue was only on 50k when it happened.

Only 1400 left of the 2.0 litre Rover 75 petrols is low, which are on the road then. I have a donor car ( tourer) with that engine in it and i only turn over once in a while and it always starts first time. I have a diesel engine tourer, however the donor car is the same spec and colour etc. However ill never use the engine, its low miles and purrs like a dream and no viz wear either.

It has the real wood dash too, which ill eventually have in my 2002 tourer. The car is in lovely condition and thought there cant be many 2.0 litre petrol tourers left, its a manual as well. early tourer too 51 2001.

A year ago I was thinking about sourcing a spare engine to keep at the back of the garage for the day when it finally gives up.
Now my commute has disappeared and my current annual mileage is tiny I think that, by the day I need one, spare engines will be like hens teeth but I'll be ancient too and prob just need a zimmer.

Love the 2 litre auto every time I drive it.

Hi Andy, is this problem more frequent with the 2.0 or does it affect the 2.5 as well? (given the cams themselves are different).

Any idea on the cause? A manufacturing weakness in the cams? Or an oil supply problem perhaps? (due to worn oil pump or worn bottom bearings maybe?).

Any thoughts appreciated.

I’ve never seen it on the 2.5, I suspect a dodgy batch of cams, but that’s just a guess!!

I have always used 5/40 fully synthetic in my K series (1.8 and 2.0) to get a quick oil feed on cold mornings. It seems to solve the initial "tappet rattle" and it exceeds the original recommended oil spec anyway.

The cause of my cam breaking back in 2006 was the tech not releasing the belt tension when changing the belts. Not uncommon apparently and spares were difficult enough to obtain then.
