Dorchester2, yes this is the cable:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/174768878...cAAOSwvpNgnqIB

This is the cable I've just bought from Ebay, and it does not seem to be fully functional. In Android, I get engine and gearbox ecu readings, and meaningful fault listings. Other modules "communicate", and report faults, but does not list them. I am trying to discover ABS faults, and I am getting nowhere!

I've tried the TOAF Windows version on my Windows 10 laptop, and, using the same cable, everything connected to COM 1 after some efforts. However, none of the modules are being read properly, throwing up errors, or "module not found" messages.

I am getting very frustrated. Is this the right cable? It is advertised as being TOAF compatible, and yet it seemingly does not work properly. Should I try one of those switchable BMW cables being advertised? Can anyone recommend a cable which definitely reads all modules in the Android app?

Many thanks!

I've got one coming out to me this week I'll let you know if I have any joy. Tried a VAG cable and soldered the pins but didn't work and I've got airbag light on and MOT next Monday so splashed the cash on the BMW cable hoping it will work

The Ebay seller has just told me that the cable he's advertising as TOAF compatible does not have pins 7 and 8 shorted. This is probably why it does not work properly! He's agreed to exchange it with one that does, so I await its arrival with baited breath........

I got the BMW cable and it works fine - I had to change the com port tho. The instructions were on a readme file which came with it. Go to device manager, expand ports, check the USB if it says COM 1 you're fine if not right click on it, properties, advanced in one of the tabs (can't remember which sorry) select COM 1 and change the latency figure to 1. The cable only started working when I did this.

The only trouble is it reads almost everything apart from my airbag module, which is where I have the fault. Mine's a 2005 and having done a bit more digging on here I can see this is a common story - TOAF will read the older car airbag systems but not the newer ones.

As it turns out, in a moment of serendipity, my son somehow managed to kick a teddy bear under my seat when he was getting out of his car seat behind me, and the light has gone off. Hopefully it stays off for the MOT!

Did this using my Android tablet and for some reason Google/the app says something to the effect that the app is not compatible with my device. As a result I might stick with the diagnostic kit that I have (Delphi) and just look at powering my windows laptop that the software is on via a car's 12V system.

Thank you for all your explanations.
Could you provide a link to your BMW cable?

I was part of the TOAF testing group.

Just get this lead for 100% guarantee it works.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/143973572531

No wiring or messing about, works perfectly.

You then will need a converter from USB to usb c that has the correct chipset in it. Get one of these.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B081S27N...ing=UTF8&psc=1

I wasted a lot of time and money, with no replies from the TOAF team asking what works and what doesn't, I wanted an out of the box solution.

I also tested it on android software as far back as Android 6.1 with no problems. I did have issues with otg adaptors from USB to usb micro (older Samsung charging ports pre USB c) and it kept dropping out a lot, therefore I wouldn't recommend anything.

Those two, are 100% out of the box exactly what you need for android compatible setup. Just remember to check your android devices usb port setup, incase you have it in the settings to check you have "enable otg" activated.

After that your flying.

I tested my combo on the following

2001 75 diesel
2002 75 diesel
2003 75 diesel auto lhd
2005 75 diesel auto
2003 1.8 manual
2002 190 ztt
2003 2.0 v6 75
2002 190 zt
2000 1.8 manual
2004 1.8t

The diesels gave me access but still limited as that seems to be software over anything, last build is pretty good for kv6 so far.

Thumbs up

That's what I call a proper masterly lecture: short but comprehensive and efficient!
Thank you.

Apparently my device running Android 5.1 Lollipop, it is a Hipstreet Pilot 10" tablet, is not compatible with it. My intention was to try it on my Rover 25 1.4, it being mems 3. Wonder if anyone else has tried toaf on other mems 3 variant cars.
