Yes Dougie, I placed my vernier calipers across the metal pipe which you helpfully ringed in red (not the black clamping components). I didn't dismantle anything so yes, it's the outside diameter.

Morning Simon. I expected nothing less from you than meticulous attention. I've ordered some 12mm I/D hose which should go on tight when warm.

Dougie.

I've never measured it it's just an old oil cooler pipe I use but think it is about 10mm

I have just measured some pipes which are similar, to the one in the thread these locking pipe and connectors are used on a lot of cars if not all cars and 9.9% of the time are the same size.

Just over 9mm

So there is a chance that an 8mm to 10mm ID clear hose will fit the 12mm you have purchased maybe to large.

3

The clear tube as clearly been stretched over the pipe already, note the diameter.
4

These are the fitting below that have been measured.

Hopefully it will help albeit a bit to late

Great effort! Thank you so much! That's perfect - 100% helpful. I only ordered 1m of the 12mm for a couple of quid so I'll get some 8mm and 10mm too for "stock".

Dougie.

Footnote to moderators: Could Artic's reply above be added to beinet1's excellent How-To? It's valuable additional information for anyone wanting to carry out the ATF purge.

No problem, in fact I’ve merged the two threads together so it’s all now in one place here

Finally set about doing the job today seeing as it's been unseasonably warm & sunny again. It went perfectly! My only slight concern had been getting the oil cooler pipe off the stud but after some careful examination whilst resting my head on a brick, I figured it out and it popped off with no argument.

Wifey duly assisted with starting the car while I monitored the flow from the stud via the clear plastic pipe into a 5L petrol can. It's a good steady flow rate - nothing ridiculous and really easy to watch the level rising in the can. It took around 25 seconds to pump 4 litres which is where I screamed STOP and was told there was no need to shout. Just making sure....

The old oil was well stinky and black. I changed 7.75 litres in the end including a small overfill which was drained via the level plug. Took the car for a 10-mile run and as with most other people, it's soo much better.

So thanks again for this great How-To, Einar. It's still paying dividends after 9+ years.

Dougie.

NB: My oil cooler is the newer type i.e. water-cooled with the two stubs at opposite ends, both facing upwards unlike Einar's photos above. Not a problem in itself, but the stub on mine was 12.5mm OD as Simon measured in post #87 above. So the pipe I used was 15mm OD and 12mm ID.

Maybe the older stubs which Artic measured above were smaller, I don't know. So my 15/12mm pipe fitted snugly (although I used a temporary hose clip just in case....).

To help others with this job, goltho has confirmed that 12mm ID tubing fitted the ATF cooler outlet pipe nicely.

I'm pleased that my measurement was helpful.

I hope I'm not confusing things but goltho's post mentions 12mm ID ?

I can confirm the correct pipe is 12mm ID. Mine happened to be 15mm OD but the OD doesn't matter as there's no significant pressure during the pumping.

Dougie.
