A lot of garages wont fit owner supplied parts, most garages at the moment are not short of work so dont need to have the hassle from poor quality or wrong parts. The other thing is there can be a decent mark up on some parts, I bet not many people have seen a garage fit a bulb that costs £0.25p but in truth that is what they are paying.

We need independent garages to keep older cars affordable, not many people can afford main dealer prices and if they can they are probably driving a newer car. I have noticed that some main dealers do a fix price for a service or job, the problem is the people doing the job are told to find other work that ''must be done'' that wont be included in that fixed price.

Get your hands on a Halfords trade card and you'll get an idea of the mark up on parts. The discount varies depending on what you are buying but I borrowed my mate's card and got a pair of top quality wiper blades for under half the ticket price.

This is also why Eurocarparts' prices are always so high but with a constant sale on for DIY buyers.

The last garage I had to send my ZT to 'couldn't get the parts' so I gave him a couple of parts specialists cards and showed him the bits online. Funnily enough, he found the parts.....

I am fortunate enough to have two independent garages that will fit the parts that I source for them. They know that what I bring them will be the best available. They always write down "customer parts" but I would never shaft them anyway. They also know that I do a lot of jobs myself and am quite capable (well, used to be when I was younger) of stripping it down to the last nut and bolt. They know that I am trusting them with it simply because the weather is bad, or I simply don't have the time to do it myself. They know, that I fully understand that complications can arise at any time, and usually do. Basically, we work very well together. Guess I'm lucky

I had two brake pipes fitted a few months ago and it looks like a bit of a faff.

Seems lik.e they spent some time on other things besides doing what they were supposed to be doing. Will you book the car in for the brakes to be done?
