Default First City Rover experience

While rummaging around at the breakers on Friday, I came across a City Rover. Now this is the first time I have actually had a chance to have a good look at one. Well, what can I say......... To be honest I was gobsmacked, this "thing" was worse than I was expecting. This thinly, very thinly veiled piece of Indian tat was just appalling. It's monotone grey hosedown interior was a joke, but the biggest joke was the Rover badge adorning the cheap and nasty steering wheel.

I realise things were tight back then, but shame on you Rover, that was a horror!

Saw one on the MGR stand at the 2004 Birmingham Motor Show.

Utterly horrific.

That interior - unbelievable quality for Rover to have been selling in 2004. My Allegro is nicer inside.

I quite like the look of it. If it does what it says on the tin a cheap reliable transport then a thumbs up from me. At the time should of been branded as an Austin and sold about £2000 cheaper to make it work.

Not sure about £2000 cheaper, £2000 basic price seems more realistic. I sat in it and wondered at the poorly fitting cheap and nasty plastics, the woeful switchgear and the general ambience of a 1980s Yugo.

Ahh Indian plastics, I wonder if they were still using mahogany mould tools to make the interior plastics

Not sure they were moulded at all, more like hand carved from the finest Indian plastic by 6 year olds with a particularly poor eye for detail!

But who was it at MGR that thought it was a good idea?

No hammer required on a City rover, just push with a finger and the steel will deform
