Default Need advice - Getting back on the road.

Hi all.

My CDT tourer has been stored in a lock up for last 5 years. She hasn't been started in that time due to various reasons.
But now is the time to get her out and back to her former glory, I'm willing to spend a bit of money, as in the 12 years I have had her she has never cost me a lot.

So what I'm asking is, what is ther best way to get her started?

Obviously she will need a good going over to see if it is worth getting her back on the road.

Many thanks.

Long term off road eh? I'd pop a battery on, check the tyres are ok, then head for an MOT via the Albanian car wash

I did this recently with a car which was last on the road in 2011, and apart from fitting a new exhaust a set of tyres and wiper blades, all of which were required, to my surprise it passed

To be fair I was expecting a fail list as long as my arm, but nope not even an advisory in sight

I've been spending time recommissioning it over the past couple of weeks, new auxiliary belts, timing belt plugs, coolant and oil change etc, and today a complete brake fluid change, and a track rod end which I wasn't particularly happy with.

You will likely need tyres at the very least with the car standing they will be flat spotted, but what the hell it's only money.

Have fun

Thanks Brian.

I don't think I will be that lucky lol.
It may also need a new clutch, as bote point is quite low.

When I bought it in 2009 I had so many plans for it, but life has changed that, but I still want it remapped, so hopefully your still doing them when it goes back on road.

Mine's on SORN at the moment. Tax, insurance and MOT long expired. So, the first step before driving anywhere is to get it insured. With a car in dubious condition, it needs serious thought.

Hmm, you might want to note that accrued NCB is lost if you exceed a two year period between expiry and starting a new policy.

I often forget about insurance, as my policy allows me to drive any car under my custody and control fully comp

They'll have your money no matter what. Might try TPFT if that's still a thing these days.

You may find TPFT makes very little difference these days.

Speaking of insurance, if its not going to be used for commuting to a place of work, try and get it on a classic insurance policy.

Nice and cheap and don't need to worry about no claims bonus.

When I once enquired about TPFT it actually cost more than a full comp policy !

Talking of insurance. If you sorn your car and cancel or remove your insurance from it, what happens if it gets damaged, sets on fire or broken into. And by the way, I know someone whose car was in the garage and the garage next door to it was set on fire by accident which spread to his and set his car on fire, total loss, and he got nothing for it. I have taken out insurance on the diesel for £75 fire and theft+ accidental damage while it is sorned and garaged You never know what might happen while it is off the road. For £1.50 a week I think it is worth it.
