Default first attempt ended in failure

A few weeks ago I bought a tap and die set. My daughter had a problem with her cycle, a thread had stripped. Agh Ha my chance. In goes the tap, a couple of turns and.... opps. The hole I'm trying to tap is not a hole in the frame but an insert, a Riv-nut.
A Riv-nut is a mixture of a Rivet and a nut. It is inserted like a rivet but is threaded down its centre like a nut. My blessed tap is not stuck in the Riv-nut, the Riv-nut turns with the tap. Fortunatly the Riv-nut was some aluminium and I was able to get a very small screw driver down the flutes of the tap and open the Riv-nut so I could get my nice new tap out.

what a failure

I think most of us who have ever used a tap has done that Ian. Now I'm not in the trade I miss certain things, a lathe, bench grinder, welder, and TAPPING GREASE!
