Rover 75 Tourer 2.0 CDTi : engine not warm, blowing cold air

Hi all guys : I have recently bought 2 Rover 75's : 1 2003 Berline (Gen 1) & 1 2004 Tourer (Gen 2). 1st is a 2.0 CDT, 2nd a 2.0 CDTi

Some minor things on the beeline, but some rather weird issues on the Tourer, I'l explain :

1) outside temperature shows constant 37 degrees Celsius (global warming isn't that powerful, so I guess ambient temperature sensor (in the bumper) broken ?

2) engine doesn't get warm : even after 20 min's of driving, it still shows as cold inside, hardly past the blue dot. Blowers inside blow COLD air.

So I placed an inline thermostat (the R5 type). Now, it's still the same, when I turn OFF the airco it gets up to 1st mark, not to 9 o'clock mark, after 30 minutes only ! Big coolant tube at the inline thermostat feels hand-warm only.

I checked the full codes, it throws me FC 21 & FC 22.

When I turn on the airco, temperature drops again, and blows COLD air.

Any ideas guys ?

Do you think it has anything to do with the ambient sensor in the bumer ?

I just checked : that sensor is dangling there, I will have a look at it this weekend. I don't use the car for now, it's too cold

Hello Hans and welcome to the club

I can't help you directly, as it sounds like it may be more than just an air pocket in the coolant system.
Do you know how to get the coolant temperature display on your ipk? (where the mileage shows).
If not -
1- put key in ignition, press and hold trip reset button. The display will come on.

2- turn key to second click but don't start the engine, the display will change to 'test' with the number 1 displayed.

3- you only have a few seconds before it disappears so quickly press the button repeatedly until the display shows the number 19.

4- take finger off reset button and wait till display shows 'test off' It will alternate between on and off. While it is on 'off' press the reset button. You will now get 0 where 19 was. Quickly press the reset button again until you reach number 7. The coolant temperature will now display in degrees c.

5- start the engine and have a drive around to see how hot the coolant is getting. From what I've read on here 92 degrees is optimal.

This temperature information will help our club experts decide what might be wrong. Hope that helps

Edit - just seen Rons post. I didn't know what the fault codes were.

Thank you madeupname, I had a test drive :

- temperature does not get higher than 57 degrees (airco off), with airco on around 55 steady ; still blows cold air, but not as cold as before

- temperature gauge shows between blue dot and 1st stripe

What I notice : since I put that inline thermostat, the temperature at lest goes up a bit, I'm sure the original thermostat is shot (stuck open), so now with this inline thermostat, the engine gets up (a bit)

If there is an airlock (maybe because of putting that inline thermostat ?) , how do I get it out ?

Never bled my cdti so can't say where the bleed nut is. Hopefully it is in the same place as the 1.8 petrol.
Search this forum for bleeding cdti coolant systems and you'll probably find lots of info

I put an inline thermostat on my cdti a fortnight ago. My coolant temperature went from 60 degrees to 83 degrees, and the heater was blowing warmer too. So I am interested in what other members think so I can get it up to around 90 degrees.

I found the bleeding screw close to the battery (black plastic screw in rubber hose).

When I open it, coolant gets out in a quite constant motion.

But I understand it is best to unmount the expansion tank, lift it up (1 person) and keeping it topped up while a 2nd person opens the bleed valve until it's a steady exit of coolant.

Right ?

What was the temperature of the thermostat you put in?
Get the OBD up with the coolant temperature and drive the car hard. You should see the temperature rise and then drop as the thermostat opens.
I have changed my in line thermostat to 92 degree version but if I am pottering around it never gets to this temperature - more like 85 degrees.
Driven hard it gets to 92+ and then drops rapidly
