There is a lot of slack in that chain Steve - so much that the tensioner may have struggled to take it all up. If the engine turned backwards when trying to undo the pulley bolt it would have pushed the tensioner back, and then maybe it stuck so, when the engine turned forward again, maybe the sprocket jumped a tooth on the chain? |

I caused the slack in the chain in the photo by removing the HPFP and the tensioner. 1 2 3

Seems i jinxed myself adding to this thread a couple of weeks ago i picked up on a bit of slapping noise, always listen to your engine, get to know it's sounds and if anything changes you get an idea something is wrong.
The sound was the start of the crankshaft pulley parting, once checked i could see the crank pulley oscillating. Used the crank pulley tool. 1 2 3 3/4 bar direct to the socket onto the bolt, no extension bar used. 4 5 new pulley in place, now here is the thing i had a brand new pulley in the shed which was cheap, bought it as an experiment a while back thinking if i ever have to change my pulley i would try this one. 6 Someone as to give them ago to find out now i am not saying go out and buy a cheap one just adding what i did. Old and new pulley side by side. 7 https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/163646589425 We all know the best pulley to fit and purchase is the Corteco pulley https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/151487666547 I also had a Corteco pulley which i picked up at a bargain price of £70.00 including the new bolt. Anyways i used an extension bar to tighten the bolt to it's 100Nm +60+60+30 8 That was 15/1021 Tools used. 9 I noticed that the belt seemed to vibrate to much but decided to fasten up and see how went, car drove fine but at tick over you could hear the belt sort of make a noise not quite like before. So 8 days later i made another decision to remove the pulley and fit the Corteco pulley. 10 At the same time i would change the belt same method used as before. 11 12 13 Remove the belt. 14 15 Then the bolt after undoing it. 16 Remove the pulley, ready to fit the Corteco one. 17 18 Note how thick the washer is which was the original washer. 19 The Corteco came with it's own washer and new bolt. 20 Something else i noticed was the gates belt that was on the car which i fitted just after i purchased the car seemed to be a little longer than the new gates belt i was fitting with the Corteco pulley, so it may have stretched, therefore i may have also removed the cheap pulley before giving it more of a road test. I may come spring or summer re-fit the cheap pulley and give it a good fe months test. Anyways the upshot is use the right tools for the job, will do a full how to once i get time Arctic.
