Unfortunately the people who don't have a 3/4" or 1" drive socket set are also unlikely to own a welder.

Default Crankshaft

My 75 CDT Auto is currently immobilised on the ramps on my driveway.

Having replaced the PAS pump and alternator within the last 3 months I'm a bit miffed to find that the crankshaft pulley has separated. I will have something to say the next time somebody tells me how 'bulletproof' the BMW unit is.

The trick using the starter failed to loosen the bolt, I feel certain mine has been overtightened at some stage and I'd love to find the person who did it.

I have a 1" drive socket set and will get to it just as soon as I can bear to look at the car again.

Strange that some pulleys fail at 80k and others go well over 300k. I always have the ATC on ECON unless I need the aircon, but do give it a run once a week.

Could it be that the pulleys don't last if they constantly have the extra load of the aircon compressor to deal with?

Anybody had a pulley fail early on a car without aircon or who rarely uses it?

Just what I had thought...

My beloved tourer was running well without any noises from the pulley areas until I noticed my air conn was not working as well as it used too...

So, I had a mobile re-gas the system.

Then and only since then, I have a rattling noise from pulley area at low revs, but when i rev - the noise disappears.

When it is ticking over, the noise is there?

Seems, ill get the mobile to de-gas and se if that helps...

The thought of a hefty repaIR is making me feel very sick

It's not a hefty repair if you do it yourself, New pulley and belts cost around £150 ..the job itself I found quite straight forward and can be completed in around two hours. Taking it to a garage will obviously cost more.
Cheers, Rob.

No need to de-gas the system. Just hit the Econ button if you have ATC or turn the aircon off if you have the manual system.

The compressor will then disconnect via the clutch and the pulley will freewheel. And if it doesn't you can cut the aircon belt off.

But if your crank pulley is rattling then best get it fixed sooner rather than later. If it fails completely the repair bill could be far higher.

You can get an oem pulley from Island 4x4 for about 110.00, made by Corteco, super quality. It is about an hours labour to fit.

It made a massive difference to the amount of noise and vibration when when changed mine.
