Default A/c compressor life?

What is the likely mileage life of the compressor? Mine has developed a whine which matches the engine revs, but only when the a/c is engaged. The current mileage is 91k and I'm sure it is the original item.

Could it be as simple as a re-gas?
Thanks for thoughts,
Derek.

Check the condition of the belt ,it may be when the pump loads it up it's making a noise, when the ac is off the pulley is free wheeling, that's where i would start.

Thanks Popcorn for devastating logic. I 'm not thinking analytically. Belt check it shall be.

Could also be the Compressor Clutch, I have had to replace a couple over the years on various cars. Some are adjustable with shims but it is often as easy to fit a new one. There is also a bearing in there that can be replaced on some cars as a seperate item.

Thanks, SCP440, for another useful insight. Deeper investigation and analysis is required. I can look and listen, but heavy work is now beyond my capability. Hence, it helps to have an idea of the problem and its solution to present to the garage.
