Thanks for this helpful data Pete. Sorry to ask this but could you run the engine again and when the temperature gets to the upper nineties grasp the lower radiator hose. This is the one with the bleed screw positioned below and alongside the air cleaner and battery box. Does it feel hot?

I guess if it's not hot it's an airlock??

Primarily I'd like to establish whether your thermostat is opening. The sustained increase in coolant temperature is alarming but yes, an airlock is also a possibility. The bottom hose should indeed feel hot if the system is operating properly.

I may try this but I guess it involves lying down and sticking my arm up which doesn't really appeal so I may take it to the garage.
So, it could be a dodgy thermostat (was replaced 5 years ago), an airlock (there's been nothing done to the cooling system so it shouldn't be that), faulty sensor (unlikely?) or how about the water pump (that was replaced 5 years ago)? Is there anything else that could account for it?

Heh, no this place is a former MGR garage, last time I was in there they had 3 75s on the go and they keep a lot of Rovers going for people down here. It's not like the place I brought my 800 where they diagnosed HGF by looking out the window at it.

I am happy to let my usual guys sort it out. Taking it in tomorrow. They've already given me a heads up on what I need to get it through the imminent MOT, brake lines and wishbone. Gonna be an expensive few weeks :-(
