Whats the best compression tester to get? Ive looked on e-bay and its given me a headache (1038 under engine compression testers!!!)

Also if I test the cylinders ( all 6 as you say) and they come back OK will that discount the warped engine theory?

Paul
I couldn't say which is the best but anyone that works will do Don't spend a lot .
It just needs a flexible tube to reach round to the the rear plug holes , otherwise it is a simple thing .My own is a Draper which I have had for many years and does the job fine. I don't for a minute expect that you have a warped head but a consistent set of readings would indicate against that. It would also indicate against any leaks from the gasket , except possibly one between an oil passage and a water passage , but in that event I would expect you to be using a lot of water .

I've spent a few hours researching compression testers as well as the combustion leak tester kits and I am now totally confused.

I know each perform differently but both claim to test and check for gasket or block damage, cracked heads or cylinder warp the first by lack of compression in the cylinders and the last by exhaust gasses in the coolant.

But...

Which one should I buy, or should I buy one of each?

If I only need a leak tester that looks a lot easier to use than a compression tester and should still tell me whether the I've got HGF, (allegedly)

In each case there are a plethora of choices from £10 up to £70 for the compression testers and £8 to £50 for the leak testers.

Can someone advise me the most suitable one (or ones) for the KV6 ( I use Red OAT if that makes a difference ) preferably ones that have been used and proven to work and fit the KV6

Cheers

I wouldn’t buy a compression tester yet, do the oil cooler, and check the other suspects first.

If then you still want to do a compression test I’ll post you my tester up.

Thanks for that Trikey

Also...

I've just been out to give her a turn over and there was not a sniff of exhaust gas on the header cap or in the header tank, either when cold or after a 10 minute idle.

On the idle I checked for smoke and there was a little but not more than Id expect on a nippy morning in Manchester. There was no more noticeable smoke when I revved the engine briefly either.

So quite a few of the tell tale signs of HGF seem absent.

I really could do with a more experienced Eye ( and Ear) to look at this for a second opinion does anyone know of a north west expert ( aside from Jules who I'm aware of but may be a little too far away )

Thanks again

Paul

Hi Paul,

To answer your question of a "North West Expert" I used to deal with Paul Kennedy who owns P.K. Automotive which is based in Wigan in Leyland Mill Lane ( near the hospital ) . His telephone number is 01942 238884 should you wish to contact him.

Paul worked at the Rover main dealers in Wigan ( Foxfields ) for 23 years and when it all folded he set up his own business.

https://youtu.be/v23gdDYDxus

Does this sound healthy? if not does it suggest problems

Cheers
