New (inline) thermostat faulty?
Bought a Gates TH01489 thermostat to replace the current one due to needle not pointing at 9 o’clock and temp running in the high 70’s. Still not pointing at 9 o’clock but IPK reading says coolant is in the upper 80’s?? Any idea of this scenario? I believe there was 88 stamped on the top of the copper top so presumably this is the temperature that it opens at.
I should add that I’ve just had a new IPK display screen fitted by Rick. I’ve read somewhere here that the IPK has seven positions for the temperature needle to point at? I’ve done the Test 2.0 and needle goes all the way to the top. Last edited by PMAN01; 10th July 2021 at 18:40.. Reason: Add info |

you need to keep pressing and go past section 2 onto section 7 on the IPK then it will show the temps

Yes, did the coolant temp check as I mentioned in my post. It’s in the upper 80’s.

This is for those that may not know how to reach the true temp reading on there car.

I did have a faulty gates thermostat with the first one I had, it failed after a few months, this one has been in a lot longer though. |

Should it matter then, that the needle isn’t pointing at 9 o’clock anymore despite the coolant being at the correct temperature?

I don't know the real answer, there are lots more knowledgeable people on here than me, that was just my opinion. I switched to an inline thermostat because I had to change the original a couple of times and it is a pain, I thought it would warm up quickly but it doesn't, even if I jump on the motorway a mile from my house it takes a couple of miles to reach full temp. I think its just the way these engines are . After it reaches temperature the needle is at 9 o clock though. |

My own needle remains at the 8 o'clock position permanently after I damaged it when refitting the needle. I fitted a live temp display (of the type that some 1.8 owners fit). If the needle moves as it gets warmer, then use that as its standard, and monitor from that. When mine worked, it never quite reached the 9PM position, but rather a couple of needle widths below. When you say it doesnt reach 9PM, what 'time' does it reach? (Ultimately as I say, it doesnt matter as long as the obd display states an acceptable temp). Another thing to remember is that the needle is not something to rely on as an accurate indicator. The desired 9PM position, represents something like 75-105 degrees! It sits just above the 8 o’clock position now. It seems from anecdotal evidence that the gauge is as ‘useful as a chocolate teapot’. I’m ok with the actual coolant being in the upper 80’s so I’ll have to settle for the needle new position.

True, to call the temp gauge vague is an understatement, the 9 o'clock position covers a huge temp range.
