Pete, thank you appreciate it. I am a bit puzzled and at one point thought the battery was duff but now am not sure. I put the battery into the car after it having been off charge for well over a week to see what would happen.
I'll ponder a bit more but may take you up on your offer

Maybe I have read this incorrectly, but the car should not be able to start without the transponder fitted (or have it within an inch or so of the barrel).

Are the keys on the same key ring? If so this could explain why it started - ie the receiver 'picked up' the transponder from the other key

keys not on same ring but both were in the car
