Default Overheating problem solved - eventually!

2002 KV6 114k Miles

A few weeks ago, the dreaded "Engine Overheat" warning appeared and I managed to tiptoe about a mile and a half home.
First thing I looked at was the expansion tank cap. The O-rings were pretty flat and my local garage kindly supplied some rings that were almost the same. No Luck.
Next I noticed the fan wasn't running so decided to check the motor brushes.
After a lot of bother with seized fasteners (much Dremel work here) I renewed the brushes. No luck.
Taking it all apart again I saw the commutator was worn concave, so really goosed. I then fitted a new fan(2-speed, silver resistor); that worked ok but still overheating.
Next, having felt the top hose was cold, I replaced the thermostat.

Still no luck, top hose hot but coolant being expelled from the cap. So although thoughts of HGF were creeping into my mind, I bought a new cap.
Joy of joys - all ok and back on the road!
Quite how three things all went wrong at the same time I don't know but maybe running on engine overheat for 5 mins was the root cause.

All this took about 3 weeks with weather interruptions and waiting for parts and I'd just had the front end re-painted requiring delicate handling.
New fan £200
Brushes £50 ( passed on to another member)
Thermostat £50
New cap £20
Gallons of OAT £32

It soon adds up!!

Plus £5.94 postage gives a total of £41.94.
It's still a cost effective repair compared with a completely new fan system though.
