Default electrical problems

Had a very simlar problem with 75 diesel tourer 54 plate. Happened after a couple of days of very heavy rain. Could not figure out reason for elec problems. Took view that as it could be an ecu problem due to water damage sent the ecu to marina Brian for a check up. Water damage was confirmed and a repair and 160 up grade was done by him. Great service and saved me alot of time and effort. Car was back to normal after refitting ecu. I would suggest that you get your ecu checked as a first step.

Water is causing this, check ecu first, then the wiring under the base of the ecu.

Thanks Simon,

I have found the instructions for testing the K bus - very succinct. The problem is I can't find the header.

I have looked around the internal fuse box (behind the glove box), behind the RH and LH plastic kick panels in both passenger and driver footwells and behind the panel above the pedals. I cannot see a grey connector as described in any of these places.

Could it be somewhere else?

The header is normally just above the ashtray, you can get to it by removing the heater control panel.

Thanks for this. I assume you mean the ECU in the plenum.

I did check this visually and there were no signs of it having been wet, though water could have got into it somehow.

How should I contact Marina Brian - via the forum?

By all means check the Engine Control Module (ECM) in the plenum Steve but all your malfunctioning equipment uses the K-bus. The K-bus "header" looks like a connector and it's grey in colour. It's inside the car and trikey has given you the location.
It has seventeen connections in total but you're interested in the eight WRY wires (colour coded white/red/yellow) which you'll find in a straight line.

To help you locate the connector, it also has two light green/red wires (if you have parking sensors) and at least five red/white wires.

Hi Steve.
Did you remove the ECU and open the case ? i presume you did not open the ECU it's self to check for any corrosion or damp areas.

First step is to lift the black case from it's bracket and out of the plenum area.
1

Next lift the lid on the case by flipping the tags front and back open.
2

With the lid out of the way you can remove the first plug connector, this just pulls up and out.
3

Then move onto the next connector, you will notice this as tang and a lever, push in the tang and pull the lever to your right.
4

5

Move that plug/connector out of the way, and onto the next connector.
6

Follow the same as above press in the tang and pull lever over.
7

Move plug out of the way.
8

The next one will be the 4th of 5 again tang and lever.
9

10

The last connector is once more one that just pulls up and out.
11

You can now lift the ECU out of it's case.
12

The ECU is now in front of you.
13

If you look inside the case you will see the glow plug relay.
14

You can now put the ECU on a clean surface.
15

Check the pins for corrosion marks, or being bent.
16

Turn over the ECU and remove the screws.
17

Lift the lid off and you will then see the board, check for wet or damp areas, and any corrosion marks.
18

Once you have checked that side lift up the board and check the other side.
19

20

21

22

23

If any signs of wet damp or corrosion then you have found your problem, if not it is always best to pass it onto someone whom can double check it and replace it if it needs to be replaced.

I think Steve did mean the ECU if you read his post again.---

Thanks Jon. I have now noticed that Steve was replying to a much earlier post and not the K-bus suggestion so I have modified my response accordingly. Thanks for pointing it out.

Thanks for the extra info. I will figure out how to remove the heater control panel next.

At least I know how to remove all the other panels now and what's behind each one! You learn so much about the car when trying to fix problems like this, don't you.
