Hi Joe.
I find that is the case with most of our now old rubber hoses the ends seem to either flay out or erode on the end, trimming back is 99.9% the solution, so hopefully you have sorted it.

I think you will find that that is a pressure relief valve that is now unobtainable. They get brittle with age so be very careful when tightening the clip.
