The gauge should be in the 9 o'clock position and not half way as you suggest.---

The one other thing that comes to mind, though, is the possibility that the heater core (matrix) may still be restricted with the remnants of the goop that was put in to fix the original leak. That stuff is just evil. Some heater cores have smaller passages than radiators. I'd be prepared for another flush - maybe even just the core through the heater hoses and with a cleaning agent or vinegar or something. If the drain/refill process doesn't do the job...

Good luck,
Glenn
I would also suggest reverse flushing the heater core, it often helps clear blockages.

Is that not the matrix, or is the heater core different to the heater matrix?

I do run my V6 with the plastic engine cover off, as it makes the spotting of leaks much simpler.
Would this reduce my running temperature by any significant amount?

Yes, the heater core and heater matrix are one and the same. It probably doesn't make any difference (negligible anyway) to the engine operating temp. Flushing - and back flushing - may well give you back your heat.

The cooling system needs filling correctly.---
I’m not so sure. It was like it when I got the car the car before doing any work, and since I fitted a different engine it’s been like it - bled a couple of times. I’ve done 2k miles like it - including some high revs / long distance driving, and also been stuck in traffic for an hour. Temps read normal via diagnostic mode on the dash and via OBD, and the fan kicks in.
