Default Have you experience using an engineering milling machine?

Have you experience using an engineering milling machine?
It has been a tad over 40 years since I last used one.

Just pondering buying one. No idea what to get but wonder about CNC.

Budget £1,000, I'd like ideas on new and second hand.
Usage.... rare

Will use it on steel.

What advice can you give me please?

a Bridgeport is very versatile, esp if its had a Retro CNC fit , used them a lot year back ..

but going to struggle with only 1000 .

Machinery at the moment is crazy. You won’t get anything worth having for a grand let alone cnc. Really depends what your going to do too because you may get a suitable machine but add money for tooling could be half that again. Single phase pedestal drills are fetching nearly a grand at the moment!!

what budget should I be looking at? I thought a grand for DIY would be enough.

Just looked at Ebay and starting at £2,500, this is too much for me I think.

Can you think cheaper?

I have a chinese lathe and mill combined which i bought second hand many years ago. It certainly cant compete with a british or american machine on quality or ease of use but it has done everything i asked of it and i wouldnt be without it. Saved me so much in time and convenience . The only downside for me is that it is a metric machine but i expect all modern machines are.

I had a couple of Rambaudi mills in the past, very accurate and easy to use (the older stuff always seems better made)
