Auto gearbox fluid question
Hi all,
Just a quick one when I had my engine box replaced I had gearbox the fluid changed as far as I'm aware you're only replacing half of it so now that I've driven the car a bit I want to go for the second round. So I've only used the genuine MG Rover stuff but I've seen there are alternatives that are compatible with the Jatco box at half the price has anyone used them and would it be okay to mix it with the genuine fluid that's in now ? Thanks in advance! Last edited by thanos.m; 14th August 2021 at 09:39.. |

I have never "mixed" fluids if at all possible but some manufacturers do say that compatible fluids are okay. I've used Smith and Allan fluid when I changed mine and you never get all the old fluid out and it has been fine. Just make sure that you get the correct grade of fluid. Beinet's guide is very helpful.

Hi Thanos,
You can use any ATF which meets the N402 specification. I have compiled a list which I hope will save you a lot of searching! There are also "universal" fluids which claim to be "compatible" with N402. That's not the same thing as "meeting" the specification and there's no point in compromising by using a "universal" fluid when the true N402 fluids are available. Yes you can mix two brands, both of which "meet" the N402 spec. Simon

I know the yanks can afford to bathe in oil ...
But has anyone tried the method often put out on youtube , of putting pipes on the the oil coller connections , one in new oil and one in a container and just run the motor until it all shows clean ?? Not sure how much you would need to do this C

Eek...never mentioned pipe cutting, more like getting connectors from an old autobox
Can't see why it wouldn't work , apart from the fluid amount needed.. C [/B]
