Default Moms just bought 75 Diesel, Diesel leak

Hi all, My moms always loved my ZT so she decided she wanted the luxury of a 75 to replace her aging Laguna. Found her a 75 conny diesel on ebay and took a gamble and bought it blind as it was advertised at a giveaway price.

Anyway got a friends transport company to pick it up for us. Got it home and on first inspection other than needing a good valet it was a very good car, but i couldnt help smelling a strong smell of diesel. Took a look under the car and most of the o/s/r section underside of the car is coated with diesel. Its not dripping but obvioulsy been spraying back. The smell is also inside the car so i lifted the rear seat and there seams to be a puddle of liquid under the seat but due to the smell inside the car anyway i cant tell if its diesel or water by sniffing it.

Im not to fussed as we got the car cheap anyway and i can do the work myself but just wondering if anyone knows of any common problems it could be?

I would think that someone has had the fuel pump out and the seal was not fitted properly when it was replaced.

A puddle in the seat well is most probably water entering through the rear window seal. If you had a puddle of diesel under the rear seat you would know about it. If the car is a sty then the owner probably did not wear gloves and smeared diesel over everything.

I agree with Ray. My first 75 diesel had the same problem when I bought it and actually filled the tank.

Tap the locking ring off the fuel pump and lift the pump out checking the position of the seal.

If, when you try to re-fit, it needs a fair amount of pressure to catch the locking ring on its locators, the seal is not in the right place.

A properly fitted seal will allow the locking ring to fit into place with minimal effort.

I spent several hours trying to get the fuel pump secured in vain until it was suggested that the seal was incorrectly located.

Under the back seat, mounted in the top of the tank on the driver's side. You need to remove the rear seat base.

No it hasn't got Fuel burning heater fitted. Although the rear seat wasn't clipped in properly on drivers side when i looked earlier so i guess you could be right that someones been fiddling with the pump.
