Default Quick urgent thermostat help needed

Just about to fit the inline thermostat but need confirmation of which way it goes in. Which end should face towards the engine please?

Bulb (thin part) toward the engine

Some washing up liquid to lubriate and warming the hose will make it easier to push it into the hose.

Hi mate, it's a Gates thermostat. Part no. TH01489 if I remember correctly. I ordered it from rockauto.com

Ordered Monday afternoon received it Tuesday morning. Total cost £9.90 including delivery. I'll post updates on my other thread once I've monitored the temp for a few days.

Good to see you've got it fitted, the system will self bleed any trapped air out over the next few days the temps should be stsble then

Russ

I did bleed it using the bleed screw after I refilled the coolant but I'll bear that in mind when monitoring the temps over next few days.

Cheers russ.

Drove the car into work this morning, 55 miles. Mostly 50mph and 70mph cruising on motorway. OBD temperaturatue Rose to 85 degrees after about 4 miles then stayed between 85 and 89 degrees for entire journey. That's up from average of 60 degrees on previous same run. Will continue to monitor it during warmer weather.

But so far im well happy with this cheap and easy solution to the thermostat problem.

Hi Bernard, no nothing to worry about. They can fail but tend to do so in the open position so if you notice the car taking ages to warm up then you may have a problem.

As with a lot of the topics discussed on the forum you only hear about the ones that go wrong. Unfortunately there is very limited access to get the old one out which is why the inline replacements are popular.

There is another reason that it is a popular topic - the CDT diesel engine is very thermally efficient so tends to run cool on low loads, so some members have experimented with thermostats to try and warm things up a bit.

If you fancy a quiet night or two in, have a read of the Diesel thermostat definitive answer thread, which is very interesting if not yet definitive.
