Is it possible
To tell by plugging an ecu into a T4 whether it is for a pencil coil or bremi coil ign system, or even better from the serial number/ sticker on the casing?
This is relating to a 2003 my v6 190 thanks. |

The ZCS coding will tell you what type of coils it should have Dave.

What coils has yours got on then Dave. Just changed the pencil coils on my 2.5 kv6 that’s 2003. Or are you after a different Ecu than the one fitted?.

Thanks Andy
Hi Dave, The replacement engine has bremi coils fitted to it, and its a 2003 lump, the engine in the car is a zs180 lump, its fitted with the beru coils,. There has been a constant electrical problem with the running of it and I am wondering if the ecu is supposed to be used for the bremi coils, although I know the wiring is in a right state as well which doesn't help. I don't want to get a replacement loom for it and swap the manifolds and ign system over if it doesn't need doing. It appears I have a knack of buying cars that bodge artist's or monkeys have been interfering with. |

The 2 types of coils have different charge time rates therefore the ecu firmware must match the type of coil fitted, the ZCS code for pencil coils is used to make sure the ecu has the correct firmware downloaded to it.

Seems like its all bodgy bodgy with this car Dave. I reckon you might be right in assuming that the ZS 180 engine was installed with the old ecu from the previous engine, whatever that was? There sure is some good? Bodgers about. You have got more patience than me that’s for sure.

I'm quietly confident that the bodgery doesn't extend beyond the engine bay Dave, the rest of the car certainly doesn't look like anyone has touched any part of it since it left the factory.
The car is now in a position to begin the engine transplant, the belt change for the replacement engine has been organised, it's just down to me, my rest days and the looming winter weather now. |
