Water level.....
Hi all....I had my Rover serviced on thursday (No problems) and a coolant change by a trusted self employed mechanic.....he carefully bled the system and topped level to just to the top of the ribbed fins, i thought the level should be a bit higher, but mechanic says just cover the ribbed fins and no more, any advice welcome...

The correct (MAX) level for stone cold coolant is at the base of the fins. If you look carefully you'll see the word 'MAX' on the bottom of the tank. There are also external markers on the thin end of the tank. Adding coolant to the top of the fins or submerging them will over-fill the system and may lead to ejection of some coolant when the engine's hot. Not a problem, other than wasting expensive antifreeze. Here's a photo.

Yep, that's how mine looks. I was always under the impression that it's to the top of the fins but that's because my coolant was so dirty you couldn't see the word max!
A good flush and all's well and the level is as above. Rik. |

The most important thing is that the cold level remains constant each time you check it (which should be frequently). The 1.8 engine doesn't take kindly to the slightest loss.

You might like to consider changing to OAT antifreeze in future which lasts for five years. Simon.
