Default HOW TO diagnose diesel starting problems

For people who can’t access a T4 or in case of intermittent issue.
( This supposes a healthy battery , a running starter , plenum drains clear and chamber dried).

The main sensors can be read using a low cost multimeter.
The measured values tell what is to be ruled out and so saving time and money.

-CAMSHAFT signal (acts only at starting)
This rectangular waveform varies from 0 to +batt can be ‘estimated’ as a DC voltage.

Camshaft info test.jpg

-CRANKSHAFT Info check :
simply notice if the tachometer needle move slightly while cranking attempt.

-LOW PRESSURE gasoil line (includes intank +inline pumps +fuel filter and sensor.)

BP test.jpg

In case of low value,Pumps have to be suspected firstly.

-HIGH PRESSURE fuel common rail line (includes High pressure pump , regulator ,injectors and sensor)

HP test.jpg

In case of low values,an injector leakback test is recommanded.

Check the HP pump regulator gaskets as well.

-MAF signal normal values

-To pick easily through the wire insulator try to make this little tool:

Hoping it helps..

Thanks Mike - I wonder if that could be made more comprehensive with the Easystart tips and injector leakback testing information?

Basically I was thinking how very useful it could be, if everything for the diesel were in one single document.

Have you also done some similar checks on the MAP sensor and the temperature sensor (might only have been fitted to the later diesels, its just before the EGR)?

Fix a poor handbrake; DIY ABS diagnostic unit; Loan of the spanner needed to change the CDT belts; free OBD diagnostics +MAF; Correct Bosch MAF cheap; DVB-T install in an ex-hi-line system; DD install with a HK amp; FBH servicing.

I've taken a vow of poverty. To annoy me, send money.

Harry,

I only considered the 'electric' side ; effecively one can add a link to
the hydraulic side ;Easystart, injectors leackback etc..
About the MAP sensor , rarely an issue has been reported and ...the access is more difficult .

On mine (2002), i haven't EGR temperature sensor fitted...

The order is good but the first (camshaft sensor test) is missing
