Came across this, briefing notes from 2001, talk of closure.
http://www.publications.parliament.u...d/1075/mg1.pdf. Given this was briefing note to parliament suggests that a decision not to support Rover was taken as it was a hopeless cause in 2001 and would run out of money in 2004. Looks like the notes were accurate. The author really did have a crystal ball.

That is brilliant reading, seemed inevitable that MGRover was doomed.
Almost like the author had a time machine and had went forward to 2004/2005 to see what was happening. For my own part, although the author see's MGRover as a failure I see them as heroes keeping production going until the very end, to the last man almost. Stubs |

Mind you the term self fulfilling proficey (if I could spell) comes to mind; the government did not seems to take this approach with the banks!
Look to the US and you will see that their guys did take action in terms of GM and Chrysler. The pinch point for MGR was in my view when they lost landrover and Mini. With those and a new sponsor (not BMW) they could have survived. The seed of failure came from the sale to BMW when so many platforms were joint with Honda although the irony is from that coes my car. If you look at JLR now compared to how it might have been under Ford then this is what MIGHT have occured for MGR had times and investors been different. |

A very interesting document. Well found. their youth."The following paragraph made me laugh though: "The MG slogan was “Safety Fast”, but it is more likely to be remembered for crudely engineered, damp, drafty, and rusting roadsters. Indeed, when the MG F was launched in 1995, Rover Group was horrified to find that the typical customers for the car were not young professionals, but couples in their 60s hoping to relive the experience of |

Interesting. Couldn't see who actually wrote this though.
It says Rover 75 panels were pressed in Swindon - is this correct? |

Interesting, thanks.
I assume this tooling must be what NAC sent to China for the MG7. |

The book "End of the Road - The True Story of the Downfall of Rover" makes interesting reading.
