Interesting. And a couple of questions if I may.
What do photos 2 and 3 show? Is it water erosion? What's the purpose of the groove at the top of the liners? TC |

Pictures 1, 2, 3: The first photos show the upper part of the sump (also the lower part for bolting the crank in place), for the oil. The sump bolts on below this section. The markings are insufficiently sealed waterways that have been draining coolant into the sump! If you remember I had this engine loose water internally, part of it was past one liner, but part of it is past the seal at the bottom of the sump. These waterways end blind, and are not sealed from the factory, indeed when you look at the Haynes drawing it shows you where the seal bead must go. The illustration misses the blind waterways, you can see the marking. A major reason for unexplained water loss?. The groove at the top I haven't got a clue. Cut be related to manufacturing perhaps. Picture 4. The engine suffered a broken aux belt, which got trapped under the cam belt. First symptom was heavy steering (belt snapped for PAS), 500 meter dead stop. All valves bent, one piston, one liner smashed. Picture 5. Loctite (red) and Hylomar (blue) sealing against water around the liners. The Loctite will lock the liners in place for added safety. The liners are in. The clamps and the plate to make sure they are in place and stay there while the Loctite cures. I don't know if that will work, but I hope! Picture 7: New bearing shells in the block for the crank. Picture 8: Pistons being fitted in the liners. 3 Liners are re-used, they showed no wear after 114000km, but I honed them in any case, to get a nice surface for the new rings to bed in on. That is against the advice of Haynes that claim they should be left as is, but what do they know :xmas-smiley-029: Pictures 9 and 10: The crank was undamaged and untouched. Strong cranks! |
