No. If your original stat has failed, it'll have failed open and is effectively just a bit of pipe these days - no need to go to the hassle and effort of removing it if you're doing the in-line mod.

To be accurate, the diesel stats never fail open. They simply start opening too early. So, with an in-line stat fitted, the original stat is still opening and closing, albeit 'ahead' of the in-line one. It does present some interesting theoretical scenarios - that I can't quite think of right now.

Default Temperature gauge

Reading this thread (and others) about picking out the built in diagnostic data from the IPK, makes me wonder if there's a way to make this appear on the ipk screen for those of us lucky enough to have a message centre. Philt4 very kindly made the speed readout available on the little 'app' he posted recently. Could this be repurposed to provide instant temp and or battery voltage?
I'd pay good currency for that.
Sorry if thats been asked and answered before; and I'm sure its not as easy as it sounds!

Not at all - it's a thermostat and housing assembly, so needs to be left in place.

We have an inline thermostat kit for the diesel models here:
75/ZT CDTi Thermostat Kit - Inline

It also includes printed instructions.

I think that if your idea (which is very good) could have been possible we would have had it by now.
Ken.

It's just as easy to pick it up from the OBD Diagnostic display
7 is temperature
9 is voltage
