I swapped over a rectifier/brush pack from a Spare Alt on Sunday in the rain to get me to work monday.

THe old pack had very short brushes @ 139k miles

Seems to have sorted the low charging out .

So this lot was just for replacing those bits on my spare .

But as you say easy, 15 mins or so to get the rectifer off the car, and then similar on the brushes. takes longer to clean it all up

Is there a how-to for a brush only replacement? I've only seen one for the regulator/brush pack replacement.

Once you have the regulator pack in front of you on the bench, you will find the brushes are crimped and soldered in place, with a plastic cap which needs to be removed to allow access to the brush holder.

I snipped, then filed the top part of the crimp and opened up the brass part to allow the old brushes to be removed, recovered the springs and then you simply feed the wire back through the brass crimp, pull the brushes into position, then fold over the wire nip the brass tube, solder it and cut off the excess wire.

The important and fiddly job is refitting the regulator without damaging the new brushes

I may do a how too at some point, though if you are competent enough to remove the regulator with the alternator in situ, I suspect you won't have a problem with the brush fitting

I found on my cdti that I just took out the dip stick unbolted the dipstick top and rotated the tube out of the way, then pulled and tied up some rubber pipes to the egr to get make room for my hands.

rule one .. don't drop anything if you have an undertray

Remove the large cable ( 13mm socket)

Then used a 1/4 drive socket set with extensions to get at the the 3 cover nuts and then the 2 main Rectifier nuts.
( also pull off the plastic cover Brian mentioned)

There are 2 other electrical fixings ( small bolts/screws) on the pack either hex or phillips headed.

Then wiggle it off the alternator studs..

As you say "BUT".

However you soon quickly learn after having either set fire to yourself or suffered electric shock.----
