no i got it wrong, the filter housing (lower part) in the tank had come apart and rotated (unscrewed) away from its correct position, when i fitted seals filter etc and put it back to were it should be the orange clip fitted fine

trade discount from local rover dealer and my labour costs nowt! im sure we could source the tank filter and seals from somewere other than rover £28) it does look like a bmw filter that ive fitted to somthing before, im going to get another kit next week to do my 18t tourer, when i do im going to try and cross ref it

You only need the FOC. The filter needn't be changed. The new one will become 'black' within a year. They never get 'blocked' so are not a service item.
