Default Diesel In Line Thermostat Housing " How to "

Specialist Components In Line Thermostat Housing

This is a basic how to to help you fit the Specialist Components inline thermostat housing to your CDT(i)

The OEM stat has failed on many diesels and as it is not easy to get at to change it, so this in line housing mod has become popular as it is an easy mod, and will restore your engine warm up times and give you a much improved heater for a “ toasty “ cabin.

There is a very long thread about the diesel thermostat as below which you may want to look at before doing the mod

Diesel thermostat definative answer

http://www.the75andztclub.co.uk/foru...ad.php?t=68468

The housing is available on E bay as below for £58 + £5 postage but John at the company will sell to club members on a group buy of 3-5 for £57 delivered

The mod really is an easy one and doesn’t need many pictures but a basic how to follows

Here is a picture of the in line housing fitted so you can see which way around it goes, make sure the heads of the alun bolts are facing away from the engine and towards the radiator

You will also need to cut out 6cm from your top hose as shown below

You will need to remove the engine cover ( 3 bolts )

You wont lose too much engine coolant and could try a shallow plastic dish ( ice cream tub or similar ) under the hose to catch it.

Make sure you have 2 jubilee clips of the correct size ( should be supplied with the housing )

Cut out the 6cm from the hose

Fit the housing with jubilee clips and tighten.

If you have saved any of the coolant put it back in the expansion tank, make sure though that there are no bits of hose fallen in from the cutting.

Run the engine for a while with the cap off to expel the air, or open the bleed valve which is a plastic screw as below until air stops coming out

bleed valve here

top up to required level as necessary

Its a good idea to take some exact readings via the On Board Diagnostics before and after you have fitted the housing so you can see what improvement it makes.

If you have not used the OBD before, its easy, with engine running press in the trip button and hold for a few seconds until the display changes to test, then press in the trip button at half second intervals until you reach number 19, then take your finger off the trip button. The display should now be alternating between log off and log on, whilst on log off press the trip button again at half second intervals until you get to number 7 and release, the coolant temp is now displayed and will remain displayed until you turn off the engine. Dont worry you cant do it any harm if you dont get it right first time, just wait a few seconds until the trip display returns and start over

Has anyone done this yet on their own car as per shown by the pics and description. And has it worked properly. I bought this exact one and its on its way to me now see and I want to know if there is any temperature problems after. For instance, I thought that pipe was the water flowing into the engine, not flowing out. If that's the case it's a dull place to put the thermostat because the water and heat isn't being pushed against it to get it to temperature to open. Anyone bought this and done the job? Cheers

i have not bought one of these but i have put a stat in the top hose and it works fine. hot water flows OUT of the engine through the top hose to radiator to be cooled and recycled back through engine.

I've fitted one of these housings with a 92 degree stat. Works ok. Temp gets up to 93/94, stat opens then temp drops to 85/86 before rising again. I fitted a QTH107K thermostat.

Exclamation Mine Goes Higher

I intend fitting a QTH107 (or equivalent) in due course, but it gets as high as 99 before dropping to 84 / 95 with the stat it came fitted with (which I presume is a QH104 rated at 88).
The acid (low ambient temperature) test for me will be in the first week of April, when I next use the M62 to go to York. Wouldn't be surprised if the temperature range is a bit narrower and more stable with maximum and minimum figures being a little higher.
