Whirring noise could be air con is on, the compressor or fan. Clunk could it be drop links, broken spring, engine undertray catching speed bumps ( mine sometimes does this )

Thanks guys whirring noise seems to be when I take foot off accelerator pedal will try without aircon on clunking over speed bumps sounds like engine under tray it didn't happen with my old rover 416 I would have thought my 75 would be a smoother ride

is usually drop links, DL bushes or wishbone rear bush.
Whirring could be anything connected to the belts, bottom pulley, idler pulley, air con pump (mine does this and goes quite when I switch to econ), water pump, power steering pump....

if it is as you take your foot off of the pedal I would look at the idler (Tension) pulley, this is the cheapest bit to replace and they do wear..

Grab the bottom of your drop links and force up and down to check for play...
Then see if the wishbone bushes are worn by trying to roll the front wheels forward by hand when the car is parked, if it bumps then the bushes have had it.

Is your car a facelift diesel? If so the noise you hear could be the high pressure pump overrun issue. Had it myself on a facelift tourer and wasted 100 quid on a new regulator which didn't cure the problem.

Mine was making a sort of whirring noise as well, tracked it down to the aircon belt, it was horribly cracked, a quality new one sorted the problem.

what about slave cylinder/throwout bearing? I thought this made that kind of noise - its what I think my car is doing...

although I do know the aircon belt is not in good condition either - however since my aircon doesnt work and compressor wont turn on its low on my list of priorities...

Where roughly is the noise coming from? try it in A/C econ mode see if there is a difference, clutch pedal up/down, left/right/front or back of engine bay, any funny smell?

Default still making noise

Only makes noise when driving and aircon doesn't make any difference whether it's econ mode or if it's switched off definitely doesn't make noise when accelerating
