Fuel filter separation
Firstly, apologies if someone has already done this - I searched for the 'Fabled Orange Clip' and, although there were several threads, I didn't see any pictures!
When my car refused to start shortly after I bought it, with the help of this forum I quickly diagnosed fuel filter separation, and fixed it. I didn't have time to get a clip, and I thought that as it had done 60,00 miles before falling apart it would last another 60,00 if properly tightened! Wrong! It happened again on Wedensday after only 20,000. I went to start it and heard a clunk from the rear seat. When the car failed to start I realised that it had been the filter separating. Fortunately I have dual-fuel, so was able to get it started on LPG. Having bought the clip from a local dealer (£5.36 seems a lot for a small piece of plastic, but the car's worth it!) I thought that I would photograph things. Hope that the following helps! Just tried to attach the pictures. This hasn't worked out like I hoped - I wanted to add a picture and explain what was happening (other users have done this!). Alll I can do is attach 5 thumbnails - unless someone can tell me how to attach the pictures, this will have to do! |

If you upload your pics to your image gallery, 800 X 600 is a good size, Then copy the BB code from the field below each picture. Then paste into your post. That will do the trick.
Once the new look forum is up and running a pdf of the fuel filter fix will be created using the pics and dialogue from various threads in an easily searchable database. Any problems with pics, they can be emailed to me, PM for address, and I will upload them for you. Thanks for doing this. |

fuel filter repair (with pics!)
Thanks Grey Ghost - here goes
The clip Not a difficult job, just make sure that you don't drop the clip into the petrol tank, as I nearly did! When replacing the filter, make sure that the two parts of the seal are together first, not like shown in the picture! Car started first time! |

Now copied, posted, and locked in the Engine and Technical How to forum.
It is advised that there is no more than half a tank of fuel present when carrying out this task. It may be necessary to siphon some off before starting the job. There is another on the club site in the how to section but it is not as detailed as your pics. Thanks again. Last edited by GreyGhost; 18th April 2010 at 11:05.. |

The other way is to screw a self tapping screw in between the top and the bottom flange, that costs nothing!
But nice pictures, now I know how the clip they all talk about looks! |

No problem about the tank contents - its rarely more than a quarter full!
The self tapping screw was 'Plan B' when I thought that I'd dropped the clip in the tank! |

Looks like its a faulty pump after all
Spoke to guy at the garage this morning and they told me they'd removed the pump from the tank and tested it "on the bench". It didn't work. Twas dead deceased etc.
Said he'll will also check the filter today and install the fabled orange clip if required. Better get my credit card warmed up.. Pipe. BTW is it worth asking for the failed pump back and getting it reconditioned/fixed ? (ie try 2 recoupe some of the cost) |

This would be the first case of a failed petrol pump on the forum as far as I can remember. They are usually bombproof. I also know that pumps are replaced by garages who either don't know what they're doing or are looking for some extra profit from an unwary customer. Considering their replacement cost, I'd suggest that you retreive the old pump for examination/recovery.
