Starting Problems.

Ok guys, here's one for you. Yesterday, I got up for shift at stupid o'clock, got in my 75 and tried to start it. The key had opened the doors OK on the fob, but all it would do is turn over. I took the key out, locked and unlocked the car, tried again and it started.
All fine and hunky-dory for the rest of the day.
This morning, again at stupid o'clock, unlocked the car on the fob, again, just turned over. Tried the 'spare key', lock and unlock, just turned over, no start. Got it out of he way by nefarious methods, went to work in other car.
Got home this afternoon. Unlocks fine, even boot release on the tailgate (that hasn't worked in ages!), no start but turns over. Fuel pump relay can be heard clicking in with the key. Tried 'spare key', unlocks and locks fine, no start. I then pushed the car back onto the drive but couldn't quite get it all in, so I tried at wind it in on the starter (I know, bad idea but....) and the damn thing started up, albeit lumpily but then settled down fine. Once on the drive, I let it idle for a while , turned it off, locked and unlocked and now it won't start again. I've checked the plenums and they're dry (which after the downpour we had yesterday is surprising). I'm open to ideas....

Which of your two cars are we talking about here Mike; the 1.8 or the diesel? Wearing my deerstalker and puffing at my meerschaum pipe I deduce by the mention of a tailgate that it's the diesel. Am I right?

Indeed. Sorry, I should have been clearer.

OK, thanks for confirming Mike. There's lots of information already on the forum regarding the non-starting of the diesel. I'm thinking of things like the in-tank or underbonnet fuel pumps and "injector leak-back" (which I don't pretend fully to understand being a petrol head). Steve (Arctic) and Mike Noc are best placed to advise you.

Looks like that will be tomorrows job then (it was piddling down today at the wrong times again!).
I hope its not the ECU playing up as that has only been back from MarinaBrian a few months....

Mike Noc 11th April 2024 08:26

Cam sensors are well known to fail when warm starting but they can play up first start of the day as well. Try unplugging the MAF sensor as some aftermarket ones can cause idling problems when they fail. When it doesn't start does the oil pressure warning light come on with key to position II as it should? And if it is an automatic do you get EP on the gear selection display?

Mike Noc 11th April 2024 08:37

Another quick check is to remove the outlet pipe from the UBP where it enters the fuel filter and place it on a large jar. With key to position II you should get a good strong flow of fuel into the jar for 30 seconds or a minute depending on which ECM is fitted. Anything less and it points to a fueling fault.

Worrying that you have a receipt for an orange clip - if someone has been in the tank trying to fit it they could have caused a problem. :getmecoat:
