Just thought I'd post an update here.
The level of security I wanted was WPA2. Its all sorted now. My security password not being recognised by the laptop was down to an out of date LAN card driver on the laptop. I noticed it was 2002 so clicked to look for updates and hey presto!! There was also a patch (if using WPA2 on XP) from the microsoft site, but this didn't work until i updated the driver. I'm one happy bunny now........
