I know our roads are bad but do any other cars suffer so many broken springs.
The only broken spring i have ever had was on a Peugeot 407 SW - my previous Rover - a 216 gti went to 150,000 miles on original springs.

A thanks to Brian who gave up an hour of his Saturday to check over my car. Fortunately following his inspection it turns out the spring was not broken after all.

My front spring just broke today at 282000 miles. 2004 model which in not covered by the type protector recall.

No sound of the breaking spring when it happened,

It was making a weird noise at low speed, getting louder as I slowed down, but It was quiet at high speed including 20 miles of motorway!

After parking at work, I smelt a rubber burning smell.
On investigation, I appear to have another groove in my tyre !!

I was lucky that this didn't "let go" on the motorway !!!

A while back, the AA website had a very interesting article on spring fractures and confirmed what most followers knew already. Most fractures happen in the colder part of the year. This tallies with all reports on the 75/ZT forums and is common across all marques. Unfortunately the article disappeared a few months ago, but I did copy their statistical plot of thousands of events. This is it.

The mobile mechanic who came to my office car park today had just repaired another Rover 75 front spring last week. He still had the broken one in the back of his van.
